COMPARISON OF DIFFERENT PROPAGATION METHODS IN WALNUT (Juglans regia L.) MADE IN SLOVENIA

During the seventies, in-room omega bench grafting technique was developed for walnut propagation in Slovenia. About 4.000 grafted plants are produced each year with this technique. The standard grafting procedure used in Slovenia includes: one-year-old rootstock, one-year-old scion, grafting by machine, in-room ‘forcing’ under controlled conditions at 26–28oC and 80% relative humidity for three weeks, acclimatisation at room’s temperature in a shadow for a few days and planting in a nursery until next autumn. Grafting is done in the first half of April. The success of this method varies. At the end of the second growing season in the nursery between 48 and 73 % of quality plants were grown, tall at least l20 cm high with a good root system. A few technological improvements in the omega bench grafting and some other propagation techniques have been tested since 1996 with the aim to reduce risks in walnut propagation and to obtain a more or less constant number of high quality grafted plants each year.
