PRESENT AND FUTURE PROJECTION OF STRAWBERRY PRODUCTION IN TURKEY

During the last decade strawberry production has spread throughout almost all parts of Turkey.
Total annual production is now amounted to 120.000 tons.
Almost all of this production comes from small family farms of 0.5-5 da.
Very early productions of strawberries starts in November-December.
The crop is produced in the Mediterranean coastal areas and it is followed by a later crop in the Aegean coastal areas in March.
Growers in the eastern coastal areas of Black sea produce strawberry in April-May.
In all of these areas summer planting system is practised using frigo plants of new Californian cultivars.
Some of these plants are obtained from propagation nurseries in the Cappadoccia region of Central Anatolia and the rest are imported.
The majority of the growers apply modern cultivation practices such as raised beds, black plastic mulch and drip irrigation.
In the Mediterranean and the Aegean coastal areas plastic walk-in high tunnels or glasshouses are used for early production.
Some of the growers place bee hives plastic or in glasshouses.
Bomble bees are used only rarely.
