STRAWBERRY GROWING IN IRAN

In Iran more than 20,000 tonnes of strawberries are produced each year.
Kordistan and Golistan provinces are two main regions of production with 2,000 and 500 hectares respectively.
Kordistan is located in the north west of the country.
With more than 16,000 tonnes production per year it is the largest of the strawberry production areas in Iran.
The area under cultivation is still increasing.
Most of the strawberry growers are small land holders.
Strawberry growing in this area is a family business.
More than 10,000 people are working in strawberry production.
Riverside land and mountains slopes are used for strawberry growing.
This enterprise provides good income for farmers.
The cultivar under cultivation is called Kordistan.
It was imported about 30 years ago from France and was cultured near Marivan.
This variety is still dominant in the area and is well adapted to the region.
The strawberry research work is concentrated in Gorizeh Research Station.
Few studies have been done on new cultivars in the area.
In one study, the yield of 15 cultivars was compared with Kordistan, the control cultivar.
Fresno, Missionary, No. 14 and Kordistan gave the highest yield.
