STRAWBERRY GROWTH AND YIELD IN RESPONSE TO THE ENVIRONMENT: INTRODUCING NEW PRODUCTION SYSTEMS

All major elements of the Californian ‘winter’ production system were tested in New Zealand with the objective of achieving substantial improvements in fruit productivity.
Each element relied on alteration to the temperature environment of the plant in the nursery or fruiting bed, or the plant’s ability to respond to these temperatures.
For each of the two cultivars used (Pajaro and Camarosa), total yield improvements of up to 31% were achieved over current commercial practice by combining all essential elements of the system.
Vegetative growth broadly reflected some of the soil temperature regimes experienced in the fruiting bed, and fruit yields generally responded to crown size differentials.
