Abstract
Strawberries are produced in Belgium with different cultivation methods (glasshouse/plastic tunnel/open field, June/ever bearing varieties, early/retarded,
). In each cultivation system different climatological conditions like temperature (T), relative humidity (RH) and duration of the light period (L) occur.
These climatological differences have important influences on the fitness and success of beneficial fauna which is introduced in strawberry fields to control phytophageous pests.
So far, too many failures have occurred in biological or integrated pest management due to inappropriate development of the beneficial fauna followed by an insufficient control of the pest.
For two beneficial species Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot and Neoseiulus californicus McGregor (Acari: Phytoseiidae) that control the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae), predation and reproduction parameters were studied under different T-RH-L combinations.
Predation success was recorded as the amount of consumed eggs.
The studied reproduction parameters included fecundity, egg hatch, larval and nymphal survival, sex ratio and generation time.
For each condition, an eventual preference (or the absence of a preference) for a beneficial species was determined.
Moreover, in crop climatological conditions were followed using 15 minute recordings of T and RH in the most important strawberry culture systems from planting till harvest.
