Abstract
Growth, development and solasodine production of Solanum khasianum Clarke and Solanum laciniatum Ait. were studied in field trials under conditions of water stress.
Vegetative development, fruit production and yield, of S. laciniatum were severely affected by water stress.
However, while limited water supply inhibited vegetative development in S. khasianum, fruit production and yield was not reduced, and fruit maturity was enhanced considerably.
Solasodine content of the fruits was not affected in both species and solasodine content of S. laciniatum leaves remained the same.

S. khasianum developed more negative water potentials and turgor was retained in the leaves during conditions of extreme water stress, while S. laciniatum responded with apparent wilting.
The different ability of the two species to adapt to drought conditions in field trials is discussed.
