Abstract
Field trials were performed on Ocimum basilicum, L. during two growing seasons.
The fresh herb was cut 4 times at the flowering during spring and summer months.
Plants were sprayed 4 times (one for each cut) with GA3 (50,100 and 200 ppm) or MH (100 and 200 ppm). The results showed that each increase in GA3 conc.up to the high level considerabl-y reduced plant height and number of branches per plant as well as the total yield of herb.
Spraying MH especially at 200 ppm slightly reduced plant height and increased the yield of herb.
Meanwhile, MH at 100 ppm greatly increased number of branches per plant.
The oil percentage of fresh herb was significantly increased with GA3 at 50 ppm as well as MH at 100 or 200ppm.
By GLC analysis of essential oil 22 compounds have been identified, where 11 component were compared with authentic reference samples as: Myrcene, beta-pinene, Ocimene, Linalool, Vanilline, Terpinyl-4-ol, Geraniole, Eugenol, alpha-ionone, Nerolidol and beta-ionone.
