Abstract
Horticulture is an important sector of agriculture; crucial for attainment of food and nutritional security.
Horticultural commodities contribute to sustainable income, improved livelihoods, foreign exchange earnings, raw materials for the industries and employment generation.
Nigeria has competitive and comparative advantages in the production of a number of tropical/subtropical horticultural crops.
Its diverse vegetation favours the production of tomato, pepper, onion, ginger, plantain, banana, citrus, mango and many indigenous fruits and vegetables.
To sustain relevance of the commodities to food security, income and export promotion, the National Horticultural Research Institute in Nigeria has developed technologies over the last decade.
These include rapid propagation and multiplication of citrus, plantain/banana, pineapples, improved cultivars of tomato, pepper, and okra, extraction of essential oils from tropical ornamentals, cost–effective, environmentally safe, insect and disease management technique, waste management, decorticator for Irvingia, organic bio-pesticides, and horticultural tea.
Effective adoption of these technologies has strengthened the contribution of the horticultural value chains to food security and sustainable development in the country.
