Integrated management of the main tomato pest insects in the market garden areas of Niayes in Senegal

Abstract
Tomato production is confronted with pest attacks.
The use of chemical insecticides is the main method of control with all drifts.
To propose an integrated management method for the main tomato pest insect, a monitoring of 98 tomato fields was carried out in three zones (south, central, and northern) in the Niayes over four crop cycles.
Insect pests or their damage were observed on 24 plants per field, every three weeks, from transplanting to harvest.
The collected larvae were surveyed in the laboratory.
Agricultural practices are investigated by questionnaire during visits to farmers fields.
The insect Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is the main pest of the tomato crop, by the destruction of young fruits.
Its impact did not differ between zones.
Damage was greater in the first part of the dry season, on the first crop cycle immediately following the end of the rainy season.
The tomato leaf miner, Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), was present predominantly at the end of the dry season, in the southern area of the Niayes.
The tomato lepidopteran pests were attacked by seven species of larval parasitoids with a rate parasitism of 22%. The species Meteorus laphygmarum (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) was the most abundant and the most frequent.
Its parasitism rate was higher in the central and southern areas than in the northern zone.
Agricultural practices influence damage and larval parasitism.
These results showed that the exploitation of the H. armigera pest community together with a good management of tomato cultural practices can be an efficient and sustainable method of the pest control.
