Abstract
Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is a key pest of tomato crops in Senegal causing heavy losses in its production.
The objective of this study was to determine seasonal population dynamics, damage to crops and T. absoluta host range in Senegal.
The population dynamics of this pest was surveyed over two years between 2013 and 2015 in the main vegetable-producing area in Senegal (Niayes). T. absoluta was monitored using pheromone traps.
Incidence of larvae was assessed on tomato crops by counting mines with and without larvae.
Monitoring of a set of 527 solanaceous field crops and spontaneous plants was carried out throughout the 2014 and 2015 cropping and rainy seasons to assess the host plant range.
A peak population of T. absoluta was observed in the late dry season.
A drastic decline in T. absoluta abundance was observed during the rainy season.
Concentrations of the leaf miner populations during rainy season were observed in the few tomato fields available in the area.
Results showed that this pest was able to develop on eggplant and Ethiopian eggplant as alternative host when tomato is absent.
Obtained data may help Senegalese farmers to detect early infestations and the leaf miner host range, therefore, to establish and to apply efficient control methods.
