Abstract
Root architecture and plant biomass traits were investigated for 25 aubergine-genepool accessions representative of 9 Solanum L. species, including S. melongena L. The accessions were grown in the field in southeastern France and had previously been phenotyped in 1-m high PVC tubes.
Few or weak correlations existed for the traits measured in the field with traits measured using the tubes: root diameters measured using the two methods showed some correlation.
In the field, S. melongena genotypes had the highest harvest index but showed different strategies for carbon allocation to fruits, roots and shoots.
Variation for biomass and harvest index traits existed in the collection as well as for the different root traits, including their: number, diameter, volume and angle frequency.
These results indicate possibilities for adaptation of aubergine accessions to different environments that could be tested as rootstocks.
