Abstract
The fall armyworm, S. frugiperda threatens maize production and has recently been reported in Africa.
It can destroy crops if no protective measures are taken.
The chemical control often used against this pest, sometimes seems ineffective.
Knowledge of native parasitoids remains an important option for good pest management.
The objective of this study is to determine the native parasitoid complex and assess parasitism rates of S. frugiperda. Surveys were conducted in three agro-ecosystems areas: Casamance, Niayes and The Petite Côte.
The Petite Côte is the most infested area followed by Casamance and finally the Niayes area.
Eight species of parasitoids have been recorded.
The parasitism rate is higher in Casamance, followed by the Niayes and finally the Petite Côte.
The species Pristomerus palludis is the most effective parasitoid.
These results show the importance of biological control by conservation of the fall armyworm in Senegal.
This study is one of the first steps in the implementation of a biological control program against the species S. frugiperda.
