Abstract
Fruit spot is a major constraint to the production of citrus in Nigeria.
However, its incidence and pathogenicity have not been determined nor control measures developed.
Thirty-eight locations in 11 major citrus producing states viz., South-West (Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ogun), North Central (Kogi, Nasarawa and Benue) South-East (Enugu and Anambra) and South-South (Edo and Delta) were assessed for fruit spots disease prevalence.
Ten citrus trees were randomly selected per location with 10 fruits sampled per tree.
Incidence of fruit spot was rated on a scale of 0-4. Efficacies of 2 synthetic fungicides (Red force and Hat-trick) and 2 bio-pesticides (NIHORT-Lyptol and Neem force) were tested in vitro on the causal pathogens (Colletotrichum gleoesporoides and Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae). Data were collected on radial growth and mycelia inhibition and subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA). Means were separated using the Student-Newman-Keuls (SNK) at P≤0.05. Highest disease incidence occurred in Nasarawa (76.67%) and Osun (75.00%) states.
Moderate infection of 39.17, 26.67, 40.00 and 26.67% incidence was recorded in Oyo, Ondo, Benue and Kogi states, respectively.
Mild infection (11.67%) was observed in Ogun state.
Incidence was absent in Edo, Enugu, Delta and Anambra states.
Radial growth and mycelia inhibition of C. gloeosporioides by NIHORT-Lyptol was significantly (P≤0.05) higher (84.0%) than Hat-trick (73.0%), Redforce (70.0%) and Neem force (27.0%). Highest mycelia inhibition of 65.0% was observed both in L. pseudotheobromae treated with either NIHORT Lyptol or Hat-trick while the lowest mycelial inhibition (11.0%) was recorded in Neem force.
Fruit spot disease was confirmed in citrus producing areas of Nigeria.
NIHORT-Lyptol compared favourably with Hat-trick in its potential control of the diseases.
