Abstract
The study assessed the influence of capacity building on rural household’s knowledge of soap making from plantain and banana (Musa spp.) waste.
Banana and plantain are widely cultivated crops among resource-poor rural farmers in Nigeria for their fruits.
Production results in corresponding increase in by-products that are less-used thereby constituting agricultural waste.
It would be economical to convert this waste into useful household or commercial products that would provide additional income for farm families while preserving the quality of the environment.
Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria, noted for the banana bunchy top disease (BBTD) with mitigation measures already in progress was selected for the study.
As part of efforts to encourage participation of women in the mitigation of BBTD and derive maximum benefits from plantain and banana wastes, a specific capacity building programme was conducted.
A quasi-experimental design using structured questionnaires was used to collect data from 94 respondents thereafter analysed with descriptive and inferential statistics.
A majority (87.5%) of respondents had no previous knowledge of natural soap making, 80.9% were female and a large proportion (46.8%) were 33-45 years old.
Pre- and post-knowledge mean scores were 1.34±0.82 and 10.84±2.59, respectively.
A significant difference (t=18.84, p=0.00) was found in respondents’ knowledge before and after training.
Accordingly, capacity building on value addition of horticultural produce is considered an effective strategy in enhancing the quality of life of rural households.
