Abstract
Cucumber target leaf spot (TLS), caused by Corynespora cassiicola, is an emerging worldwide disease. C. cassiicola spores released by infected cucumber plants play an important role in the epidemiology of TLS disease.
Temperature and relative humidity (RH) are significant factors influencing the spread and prevalence of cucumber TLS. In the present study, the regularity and the effect of temperature and RH on the sporulation and release of C. cassiicola were investigated in artificial climate exposure chambers and plastic greenhouses.
The results showed that C. cassiicola produced a large amount of spores on diseased leaves under high humidity (RH>90%) at night, and released into the air under low humidity (RH<60%) during the day.
This daily variation regularity of sporulation and release is consistent in different seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
The alternating day-dry and night-wet environment in the greenhouse promoted the reproduction and diffusion of C. cassiicola, and accelerated the spread of cucumber TLS diseases.
Our findings will contribute to the development of new ecological strategies for the effective control of cucumber TLS disease.
