Abstract
Five inbred lines of ‘Galia’ melon (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5) were crossed in Griffing’s diallel design method II model I. Ten F1’s and their parents were sown at Suranaree University of Technology Farm, Thailand during the winter/summer season (January-April 2022). A completely randomized design (CRD) with three replicates was used in this study.
It found that estimates of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) on fruit weight (FWe), fruit width (FWi), fruit length (FL), fruit cavity length (FCL) and fruit pulp thickness (FPuT). The inbred line P2 and P3 were two best general combiners on Few, Fwi, FL, FPuT for P2 and FCL, total soluble solid (TSS) for P3. The greatest effects of SCA for FWe and FWi were cross P1×P4, P2×P3 and P2×P4, in FL were cross P1×P2, P2×P3, P2×P4 and P4×P5, in FPuT were cross P1×P2, and P1×P4, in FCL and firmness (Fn) were cross P4×P5 and P2×P4, respectively.
For heterosis, higher value in FWe were cross P1×P2, P1×P4, P1×P5 and P4×P5, in Fwi were cross P1×P4, P2×P4 and P4×P5, in FL were cross P1×P5 and P2×P4, in FPuT were cross P1×P4, P1×P5 and P2×P4, in TSS were cross P1×P5 and P2×P3. These results show that it is possible to develop new hybrid melons in the melon breeding program.
