Abstract
The thermoperiodicity of bulbous plants and the use of ethylene or silver thiosulphate, which are effective in the regulation of the formative processes, offer possibilities for reduction of the energy costs accompanying the forcing of bulbous plants.
The following subjects are reviewed: 1. exposure of iris bulbs to ethylene, which can replace a heat treatment of 2 weeks 35°C plus 3 days 40°C; 2. administration of silver thiosulphate to plants or bulbs of the lily cv.
Enchantment, which can replace artificial lighting in the winter to prevent flower-bud abscission; 3. lower minimum night temperatures and higher maximum day temperatures in the greenhouse during lily forcing, which have proved very favourable; 4. two-layer culture of tulips and lilies, which gives more profit per square metre; and 5. later planting of gladioli in the glasshouse in the spring combined with higher temperatures, which requires much less energy and yields flowers of the same good quality.
