Abstract
Chrysanthemum plants (chrysanthemum morijolium cv.
May Shoesmith) exhibited modified growth in response to root zone heating.
The response was dependent on night time air temperature.
Root zone heating with standard air temperatures (17°C) caused an overall reduction in plant size.
The reduction is reflected in plant height, as well as fresh and dry weights of leaves and stems.
Axillary shoots in non-disbudded plants were also smaller with root zone warming.
Earliness was enhanced, however, with root zone warming.

Root zone heating with standard air temperatures (17°C) caused an overall reduction in plant size.

Earliness was enhanced, however, with root zone warming.
Root zone warming with cool night air temperatures enhanced plant size when root temperatures was less than those measured in control plants from standard night conditions.
When root temperature exceeded the control temperature under standard night conditions a decrease in overall growth was observed.
Bud weight increased with root zone heating under cool night conditions.
