Abstract
The effect of supplemental lighting (high pressure sodium ) on tomatoes, cucumbers and roses was measured and compared to ambient conditions.
The benefits of lighting included higher production of the vegetable crops, while for roses a higher yield as well as improved quality was achieved.
The benefits of lighting included higher production of the vegetable crops, while for roses a higher yield as well as improved quality was achieved.
The measured data did not correspond well with predicted increases as calculated by model calculations (Elgersma, 1980).
Economically, supplemental lighting for roses appears feasible if both the increased production and the improved quality are considered.
For tomatoes and cucumbers, the required price for the produce to cover the costs of supplemental lighting appears high for the Ontario market.
