ATTEMPTS TO CONTROL FUSARIUM WILT OF CARNATION BY THE USE OF SUPPRESSIVE SOILS (*)

Abstract
Fusarium-wilt, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi, is actually the most severe disease of carnation in Italy.
Control of this disease has not been satisfactory in many instances.
Some soils were found to be inhospitable to this pathogen in some carnation growing areas in Northern Italy.
The mechanism of suppression of some of these suppressive soils collected in Liguria was demonstrated to be biological control.
The addition of small (2–10%) percentages of these suppressive to conducive soils induced significant decreases in the incidence of carnation wilt.
Several fungal antagonists, isolated from a Fusarium-suppressive soil, proved to be the main factor of suppressiveness.
An excellent control of carnation Fusarium-wilt was obtained by adding these antagonistic fungi into conducive infected soils in pot experiments.
When environmental factors favourable to the antagonists will be better known, these agents could be used in field applications.
