Abstract
Hardwood basal cuttings of ‘Jefferson’ peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch) were wounded, treated IBA (1000 ppm) and placed into polyethylene brown bags containing different media.
Two levels of moisture (65%, 90%) were maintained for each medium.
The bags were kept for 30 dd at 23° C (+1). Rooting was affected by medium and moisture level.
Cuttings in perlite exposed to 90% moisture content rooted better than those held at 65% moisture.
On the other hand, those in No. 3 vermiculite rooted better when the moisture was mintauned at 65%. Milled pine bark did not show significant differences in rooting percentage between the two moisture levels but cuttings in this media rooted with the highest percentages and had the greatest root numbers of any media studied.
It was concluded that for the rooting of peach hardwood cuttings, by the polyethylene bag technique moisture content and aeration play an important in the rooting process and milled pine bark has the characteristics of a promising medium.
