Abstract
The last 20 years we have seen rapid changes in the technology used to produce plants.
Glasshouses, heating systems, automatic watering and feeding systems have been new developed and transformed for better plant growth.
But also there are so many changes in making substrates.
New materials have been used, standardised potting mixes have been made so the use of these new horticultural substrates should be regarded as a new system of growing, rather than a simple change of substrate.
The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of the newer materials with information on the specific characteristics as well chemical as physical.
