Abstract
After a short historical introduction to "El Maresme", this paper presents the problem of the cultivation of container-grown ornamental plants in this zone, mainly due to the difficulties in controlling light intensity, temperature and relative humidity in the conventional greenhouse.

The necessity of designing a greenhouse for Mediterranean climatic conditions becomes essential to satisfy ecophysiological requirements of foliage plants.

The choice of a substrate, which acts as a suitable water and fertiliser supplier, in the all-integrated system of controlled environmental conditions is discussed.
