Abstract
In Apulia region, pistachio photosynthetic activity was assessed by means of a portable infrared gas analyzer.
In young nonbearing trees, no difference was found along the shoot except for the last node.
The leaf surfaces did not exhibit any difference, except for the water use efficiency which slightly prevailed in the lower one.
In mature trees, no differences were detected between bearing and nonbearing shoots, but for the quantum yield which was lower in the medium portion of the bearing shoots.

In mature trees, no differences were detected between bearing and nonbearing shoots, but for the quantum yield which was lower in the medium portion of the bearing shoots.
Under dry growing conditions, the increase of stomatal conductance and transpiration resulted in a significant decrease of water use efficiency; in irrigated trees, water efficiency appeared related to photosynthesis rather than to vapour exchange.
