IMPROVEMENT OF PRUNING TECHNIQUES FOR BEARING PISTACHIO NUT TREES

This study was carried out in 1993 to determine the proper pruning techniques for pistachios in Gaziantep.
In addition to local pruning method, light and heavy pruning were applied to one year old shoots in order to demonstrate the reaction of pistachio nut.

The effect of different pruning techniques on yield was not found to be important, the results were promising.

The heavy pruning gave the best kernel/shell ratio while the local method pruning was the lowest.

The heavy pruning technique was also produced the best result when 100 nuts weight and split rate were measured.
The heavy pruning gave the best fruit bud retention, local pruning was the lowest.
The light and heavy pruning techniques resulted in better shoot growth than the local pruning technique.
