MACVANKA AND ZUPSKA RANA-PEPPER CULTIVARS TOLERANT TO TMV AND CMV

This paper describes the selection process as well as the morphological-production characteristics of the new pepper cultivars Macvanka and Zupska rana that were developed at the Center for Vegetables, Smederevska Palanka.
These are the first local selections of pepper having multiple genetic resistance to the economically significant diseases of pepper as well as to the Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) and the Cucumber Mosaic Virus (CMV). The improvement procedure included interspecies and intraspecies hybridization, artificial inoculation and selection based on resistance and the desired morphological-biological properties of the newly bred genotypes.
The selection resulted in several lines with satisfactory resistance to the Tobacco Mosaic Virus and the Cucumber Mosaic Virus.
Two prospective lines, RM 12/83 and RM 32/83, have been reported to the Yugoslav Committee for New Cultivar Approval.
After being tested they have been approved under the names: Macvanka and Zupska rana.
The Macvanka cultivar yields fruit of the prismatic pepper type, pyramid shaped with an average length of 14–15 cm and a fruit mass of 120–140g.
The Zupska rana cultivar yields fruit of the long type, 15–18 cm, with a fruit mass of 150 – 180 g.
They yield 35 – 45 tons of technologically ripe fruit.
