Abstract
From ecological and economic standpoint, different trends in the production of potato were observed in the Republic of Serbia.
Depending on the changes of some major factors, the trends observed were either declining, stagnating or rising.
The classification of the communes into regions according to potato production output was affected by the differences in the structure and level of the development: ecological pertaining to climate and soil; economic (national income per capita – purchasing power of the consumers, technological advances, producers’ bonds with the market etc.) and the level and efficacy of the application of technical and technological advances (high yielding cultivars, mineral fertilizers, disease and pest control). The potato production decline was affected by the population and labor force decrease as well as by the decline in the purchasing power of the consumers.
A stagnating potato production may be attributed to the stagnation of population growth, national income and the scientific and technological systems applied.
The rising trends in the production of potato may be attributed to comparatively favorable ecological as well as economic factors and an efficient and optimal application of scientific and technological advances.
In general, it can be concluded that in the production of potatoes there was a significant regression and a correlation between the trends analyzed and the effects of the development factors.
