THE SOIL FERTILITY OF VEGETABLE GARDENS IN THE VICINITY OF NOVI SAD

Abstract
The samples of surface soil (0 – 30 cm) were taken from the vegetable gardens in the vicinity of Novi Sad in order to determine the degree of fertility of the soil.
Standard methods were used to examine the following elements: pH value, CaCO3, humus, total N, available P2O5 and K2O. The available trace elements (Zn, Fe, Mn, Cu, Co) and the toxic elements (Cd, Ni, Pb) were studied by extraction with DTPA + TEA.

Normally, when growing vegetables, the pH value is relatively high (7.10±0.60 in 1M KCl). Although these soils have been intensively fertilized with organic manure and mineral fertilizers for a long period, a low humus content (3.04±0.81%) and a total N of 0.20±0.05% proved to be characteristic for them.
The degree of available P2O5 turned out to be extremely high (110.2±61.8 mg P2O5 100 -1g). The amount of available potassium is significantly lower than that of phosphorus, which is optimal for vegetable production (50.22±17.5 mg K2O 100 – 1g).
In spite of the high level of available phosphorus and the relatively high pH value, these soils are well provided with available trace elements.
The available amount of toxic elements is low.
