VEGETABLE AND POTATO PRODUCTION IN YUGOSLAVIA

In Yugoslavia, vegetables and potatoes are grown in gardens, fields, glass-houses and plastic tunnels.
Field vegetables are intended for both fresh market and processing (about 400,000 ha). Vegetables are also raised in greenhouses (about 70 ha) and in plastic tunnels (estimated at about 2,000 ha). From 1990–1995, 30 varieties have been recognized.
With an eye toward the creation of new varieties, investigation has proceeded into the genetic constitution and characteristics of the most important species of vegetables and potato, and into the development of breeding methods.
Research into agricultural practices has led to a more rational vegetable and potato production: high quality together with protection of the environment in different ecological conditions (lowland, mountain-hilly, coastal). Information transfer has also enabled a more intense development of seed production.
Besides satisfying domestic needs, this has also increased possibilities for export.
The future of vegetable and potato production in Yugoslavia lies in the preservation of the bio-diversity and genetic variability of vegetables and potatoes: diverse vegetables which are resistant to disease, quality varieties and the development of ecological technologies.
