Abstract
The Carnation Mottle Virus (CnMV) causes an endemic disease in the Bogotá Plateau, but its effect has not been evaluated under Colombian conditions.
The purpose of this work was to establish the effect of the CnMV in quantity and quality of carnation flowers, as well as in the rooting of the cuttings.
This research was developed in the Santuario Farm of Propagar Plantas S.A., in the municipality of Subachoque, Cundinamarca, Colombia.
Three varieties of standard carnation were used: "U.Conn", "New Pink Ember" and "Gigi". The presence of the virus did not affect either the rooting of cuttings or the quality of roots.
A greater production of flower was obtained in the groups of healthy plants in "U.Conn" and "Gigi", but the differences were not significant.
The production of Select and Fancy quality flowers was greater in the groups of healthy plants than in the groups of virus infected plants for the three varieties.
During the trial, no plants with symptoms of the CnMV were observed in any of the three varieties.
These results show the importance of establishing a carnation crop with CnMV-free cuttings, because both quality and quantity of flowers seem to be greater in comparison with CnMV-infected material.
