Abstract
Cut flowers and pot plants of L. longiflorum (Easter lily), L. speciosum (Oriental lily), L. x. elegans (Asiatic lily) and interspecific hybrids between L. formolongi or L. longiflorum and L. x elegans (LA hybrid lily) are produced year-round.
Production Lilium involves three distinct phases: bulb production, bulb programming, and greenhouse forcing.
Greenhouse forcing phase is further divided into three stages – from potting to shoot emergence or flower bud initiation, from shoot emergence or flower bud initiation to visible bud states, and from visible bud stage to anthesis.
To produce high quality plants, bulbs must be handled, stored, and properly programmed.
Optimum growing environments, mainly temperature and photoperiod, during an early growth stage from potting to shoot emergence or flower bud initiation must be provided to prevent the loss of flower buds.
In this presentation, dormancy and maturity of bulbs, flower bud initiation as controlled by temperature and photoperiod, and new production technologies to produce commercially acceptable quality plants in less than a year from small propagules will be presented.
