Abstract
At harvest the quality of flowers is fixed.
Afterwards the quality cannot increase only decrease.
Pretreatments are not intended either to increase the internal quality, but to prevent rapid decrease.
Genetic qualities and the way of cultivation determine what quality will be harvested.
It is important to draw up an inventory of all processes involved in production and postharvest handling and also of the main factors influencing the ornamental value and longevity of cut flowers.
Based on this information a quality care management system can be developed.
When the weak characteristics for quality of the different crops are known, testing methods can be developed to test the sensitivity of the varieties and the influence of cultivation conditions.
As quality management has to do with profitability the expected costs and returns must be compared.
