Abstract
Colombia has reached an important place at the international market of cut flowers, specially carnation in the last two decades.
In spite of this fact, there has not been any developed genetic improvement programs to deliver varieties adapted to the local condition.
Though this researches, there were developed basic studies in order to start a breeding program.
Optimal conditions for seed production were established.
It was found that the stigma is receptive when the flower is in stage of over opening, and the pollen is fertile when the flower is just open.
Intervarietal hybridization of ten standard carnation commercial varieties was carried out, obtaining viable seeds.
It was found segregation in characters such as corolla size, stem length, time to flowering and cutting harvest and flowers colors.
Better characteristics were observed in some plants, in the previous aspects.
