Abstract
To select superior and promising strains of walnut and assess variability in the seedling trees of Persian walnuts, a survey was conducted in the Himalayan region.
Nut weight, shell thickness, index of roundness, kernel weight, kernel thickness, kernel width and kernel percentage varied from 8.0 to 23.5g, 0.78 to 2.27 mm, 0.75 to 1.04, 3.0 to 8.0 g, 21.05 to 36.16 mm, 20.66 to 38.56 mm and 28.57 to 48.28 per cent, respectively.
Nut shape, shape of base, pistil point, position of pad on suture, adherence of two halves, structure of shell surface, grooves along pad, ease of kernel removal, primary and secondary inner dividing membranes, intensity of brown colour, taste and flavour etc. too varied extremely.
The higher and desired values of most of the characters were found in Selection No. 14 which proved to be promising for the area and can be vegetatively multiplied for future cultivation.
