Abstract
Apple (Malus × domestica Borkh) occupies a significant place in the horticultural wealth of temperate zone.
The productivity of apple in different hill states estimates 3.5 t/ha in Uttaranchal, 6.5 t/ha in Himachal Pradesh and 12 t/ha in Jammu and Kashmir which in contrast to Western Countries is very low where the yield potential accounts for about 30 t/ha.
The growth and productivity of apple in Indian conditions can be optimized by replacing out-dated depleted standard Delicious cultivars by the improved high yielding cultivars and adopting standard clonal rootstocks instead of seedling stock in addition to improved management practices.
The present studies were carried out on five cultivar introductions grafted on three rootstocks.
The experimental results have indicated that maximum tree volume was recorded in cv.
Oregon Spur.
Trunk girth and shoot extension growth were maximum in cv.
Well Spur.
All these growth parameters were found maximum on EMLA-106. Maximum fruit set, yield per tree and yield per hectare were recorded during 1998 and 1999 in cv.
Oregon Spur and on rootstock EMLA-106, respectively.
