Abstract
Red stele Phytophthora fragariae is a serious disease of strawberry wherever it is grown.
The affected plants show stunting, wilting, drying and produce no runners and fruits.
As the rot progresses, lateral roots are destroyed giving the main roots a characteristic rat-tail appearance.
Presently, the disease is managed through the use of fungicide like Ridomil MZ but the continuous and over-use of chemical can pose many serious problems in the near future.
The present study was, therefore, aimed to find out alternative means of disease control which is cost effective and eco-friendly.
In the present investigations, antagonism of four antagonists namely, Pseudomonas fluorescens T1R2K4, P. fluorescens IISR 8, P. fluorescens 81 and Bacillus subtilis were studied against Phytophthora fragariae under in vitro and pot culture conditions.
All the bacterial antagonists inhibited the test fungus significantly under in vitro, however, maximum inhibition was observed with Pseudomonas fluorescens IISR 8 and P. fluorescens T1R2K4 followed by P. fluorescence 81 and Bacillus subtilis. In pot culture experiments, maximum disease reduction with all the antagonists was achieved when bacterial antagonists were applied 8 days prior to pathogen inoculation in comparison to 2, 4 and 6 days.
