Abstract
A number of studies provided evidence that anthocyanins in green, vegetative tissues were related to certain protective function for the plant.
Based on this finding it might be suggested that the absence of anthocyanin could be a prerequisite for differences in the responses to environmental factors between anthocyaninless mutants and the wild type tomato plants.
The present study was therefore designed to investigate the beta-carotene, lycopene, vitamin C, reducing sugars and acids contents (that are known to significantly vary under the impact of a large number of environmental factors) in tomato fruits.
The investigations were carried out during three years, on tomato line AC and the isogenic/near isogenic lines (IL/NILs) from it differing for the following mutated genes: ah (Hoffmann’s anthocyaninless), aw (anthocyanin without), bls (baby lea syndrome), hp (high pigment) and ogc (old gold –crimson); and on three IL/NILs differing for two mutated genes: AC ogc ah, AC ogc hp and AC ogc bls. No significant differences in beta-carotene, vitamin C, reducing sugars and acids contents were detected between the anthocyaninless and the wild type lines.
Lycopene content in the fruits of two anthocyaninless lines AC ah and AC aw was significantly higher that that of the wild type line, exceeding it by 28–29%. At the same time lycopene content in the anthocyaninless mutants was significantly lower than that on AC hp and AC ogc. Lycopene content in both double mutants AC ah ogc and AC bls ogc did not significantly exceed that of AC ogc. It might suggest the absence of interaction between the genes ah and ogc and bls and ogc, which though existed between genes hp and ogc in the double mutant AC hp ogc and resulted in lycopene content higher that those in each one of the two mutants.
