Abstract
A study was conducted of the influence of high temperature on the functional state of the photosynthetic apparatus (PSA) and on the male gametophyte viability in 16 Pisum sativum accessions, belonging to the early, mid-early and late groups from the collection of the ‘Maritsa’ Vegetable Crops Research Institute.
In the preliminary studies with three model garden pea cultivars treated with different temperature values and continuances, we found that the temperature regimes 45°С for 2 and 3 hours are close to the semi-lethality (LD50) ones regarding the investigated characteristics.
It was established based on the results obtained, that fixed critical regimes are suitable for gene pool screening and for choice of genotypes tolerant to high temperature stress.
In the present study using the above mentioned temperature regimes, a negative relation was determined between treatment continuance on the one hand, and functional activity of the PSA, quantity of the reproductive organs with viable pollen, pollen germination and pollen tube length, on the other hand.
Among the studied accessions, cultivar ‘Ran 1’ from the early group possessed the most tolerant PSA and male gametophyte to high temperature stress.
The mid-early accessions showed comparatively identical response to the applied temperature regimes.
From this group line No. 4 manifested tolerant PSA and kept 60% reproductive organs with different level of pollen viability.
On this basis the line No. 4 is appropriate for including in the future pea breeding.
A genotypic differentiation in treatment with 45°С for 2 hours was established between the late group accessions.
The most promising lines regarding high temperature stress were H-205 with PSA stability and No. 95/4 with tolerance of male gametophyte.
