VARIATION AND INHERITANCE OF AVERAGE FRUIT WEIGHT AND FRUIT NUMBER PER PLANT IN F1 TOMATO DETERMINATE MID-EARLY HYBRIDS

Hybridization between four tomato determinate mid-early varieties used for mother lines and two father breeding lines was made during the period 2004–2006. Variation of the characters average fruit weight and fruit number per plant was studied in the parent lines and their F₁ hybrids and the type of character inheritance was determined.
Considerably higher variation was observed in the character fruit number per plant compared to the variation by the character average fruit weight.
The parent with lower value of the character average fruit weight dominates in 75 percent of the hybrids and there is a clearly expressed trend for over-dominating of the parent with greater fruit number per plant in 100 percent from the crosses.
The results show that the combination between both characters is possible by creation of hybrids.
Milyana x LG is a perspective hybrid combination.
