Abstract
In this paper the fundamental characteristics of the supercritical fluid extraction with carbon dioxide are described.
Particular attention is paid to the isolation of essential oils from natural matrices.
The vegetable matters here considered are: leaves of Eucaliptus globulus, Thymus herba-barona, Pistacia lentiscus, Salvia desoleana, Laurus nobilis, Helicrysum italicum ssp. microphyllum, Helicrysum splendidum, Pimenta dioica, Schinus molle L., Melissa officinalis, Ferula communis, Santolina chamaecyparissus ssp. insularis, Juniperus phoenicea, Juniperus communis L. ssp. nana Willd, Mentha spicata ssp. insularis, Artemisia arborescens, Seseli bocconi, Ridolfia segetum, Cymbopogon citratus, Crithmum maritimum and Pinus nigra ssp. laricio; flowers of H. splendidum, Calendula officinalis and Lantana camara; seeds of Carum carvi and Elettaria cardamomum; rhizomes of Curcuma longa and Acorus calamus; wood of Juniperus oxycedrus ssp. Oxycedrus, Santalum album, Guaiacum bulnesia and Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume; oleo-gum resin of Commiphora myrrha and Boswellia carterii Birdw. On the basis of experimental results, the more suitable operative conditions are described together with the influence of different experimental parameters on the yield and/or composition of the extract.
It has been considered the preliminary treatments of the matrix, the influence, on both the yield and the composition of the extracts, of the length of extraction, the quantity of solvent and the solvent flow rate.
It has also been illustrated that the comparison between the products of the SFE and of hydrodistillation techniques performed on the same material.
