Abstract
Cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) is one of the most important medicinal plants of India, Iran and many other countries.
Cumin has been recommended in rotation with summer crops such as sorghum, corn, soybean, millet and sesame.
Application of 30 kg N, 60 kg P and 30 kg K per hectare has been demonstrated to produce satisfactory yield in Mashhad.
Seed bed preparation is crucial for proper plant establishment.
Cumin seed is sown in a dry or moist bed in the form of row planting or flat plots.
Early planting (10 Dec. to 1 Jan.) showed better results.
The amount of seed required for sowing depends on soil type, moisture and fertility and 1200000 plants/ha with rows 40 cm apart gave the best yields, on the basis of 5 kg/ha.
It is recommended that seeds be soaked in slow running water for 24-36 hours prior to sowing.
Cumin crop water requirement is 335 mm/ha.
Flurchloridon herbicide is applied as post-planting for control of weeds.
Average yield of Cumin is 1000 kg/ha, that is harvested from late May to late June in cold to moderate areas (Iran). Percent of essential oils in its seeds is from 2.1 to 3.5%
