Completing the assortment with new cultivars of pears obtained at SCDP Voineşti

Abstract
Since the inception of research activities at Voineşti Research and Development Station for Fruit Growing, assortment improvement strategies have been developed, taking into account the needs of growers, market demands, and environmental factors.
In the first step, between 1950 and 1960, the primary objectives were to develop cultivars with high production potential and superior fruit quality.
After 1960, resistance to the main diseases and pests was introduced as the primary objective of selection, along with other agrobiological and technological characteristics, by incorporating biotypes with genetic ancestry in Pyrus serotina into hybrid combinations, along with pear cultivars from the valuable European assortment.
Over the years, through breeding work, inter-specific elites were obtained in F1 and F2 with high biological value, which formed the basis for the sources of resistance to certain diseases and pests in subsequent hybridizations for F3 and F4. From the vast biological material, 13 pear cultivars were selected and approved, with varying ripening periods, falling within the varietal conveyor for the area of influence of the Voineşti Station.
After the registration, four pear cultivars were introduced into culture: ‘Timpurii de Dâmboviţa’ (1967), ‘Republica’ (1973), ‘Aniversarea’ (1974), and the first interspecific cultivar ‘Euras’ (1994). In the period 2004-2023, nine pear cultivars were omologated: ‘Orizont’, ‘Corina’, ‘Cristal’, ‘Tudor’, ‘Romcor’, ‘Aroma’, ‘Andrei’, ‘Silvia’, ‘Nicolas’, the last 4, registered in the period 2021-2023, which stands out for their high-quality fruits, with a biomass between 285 and 300 g, demonstrating a good behavior against the attack of diseases and pests specific to the pear.
The presented pear cultivars are recommended as parents in breeding programs and for cultivation in all areas favorable to pear culture, taking into account the technological requirements.
