Variability of morphological characteristics in fruits of Prunus spinosa depending on environmental factors in Southern Romania

Abstract
Morphological characteristics of fruits in some blackthorn (Prunus spinosa L.) genotypes (50 genotypes) were evaluated over three consecutive years (2016-2018) in order to assess the influence of environmental conditions on fruit development.
The study was conducted on fruits collected from spontaneous populations in southern Romania, specifically in Calopăr and Gura Văii.
Fruit volume, weight, dimensions, as well as shape and size indices, were analyzed.
Fruit weight and pulp percentage ranged between 1.72 and 2.16 g, and between 83.28 and 86.21%, respectively.
Considerable variability was observed in fruit dimensions, with fruit height ranging from 9.96 to 16.60 mm, and two perpendicular widths (W1 and W2) measured at the same level of the fruit, ranging from 9.62 to 17.09 mm and from 10.85 to 16.87 mm, respectively.
The results indicate that fruit morphological traits are strongly influenced by environmental factors, leading to marked variability in fruit size, mass, and composition.
This variability underscores the importance of environmental conditions in shaping fruit quality and supports the need for detailed morphological evaluations of spontaneous blackthorn populations to facilitate their effective valorization.
