Climatic differentiation of olive-growing area in Extremadura (1990-2021), southwestern Spain

Abstract
The Mediterranean basin is the area with the largest cultivated area of olive trees (Olea europaea L.) due to its suitable climatic conditions.
Temperature and precipitation are the primary climatic variables that determine crop distribution and viability.
Within the Mediterranean basin, Spain is the principal oil-producing country, with the most important olive-growing areas located in southern and southwestern Spain.
This work analyses the average, minimum, and maximum rainfall and temperatures in the olive-growing area of Extremadura (south-west Spain), which exhibits distinct climatic and topographic characteristics.
Using daily data from the 47 stations distributed by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) in this region, a quality control and homogenization process was carried out to calculate the mean temperature (minimum and maximum), and total precipitation for the period 1990-2021. The data were subjected to ANOVA to assess the presence of significant differences.
The results show large differences in rainfall, varying between 396 and 490 mm in the central part of the region and 667-757 mm in the northeast and northwest, with the highest altitude areas of the region standing out with 1033 mm.
Regarding the average temperature, there are significant differences between the highest altitude zones in the north of the region, with average temperatures of 15.5-15.7°C, and the lowest altitude zones with average temperatures of 16.9-17.1°C. The same behavior is observed in the maximum and minimum temperatures, with the highest values in the central zone and the lowest in the northern zone.
These differences have an important influence on management across cultivation zones and on their sustainability in the context of climate change.
