Orchard designs for scab-resistant apple cultivar candidates in Latvia

Abstract
Performance of cultivars ‘Alesya’, ‘Felicita’, ‘Lora’, cultivar candidates DI 3-90-45, DI-93-4-22, and Nr. 28-97-4 was tested in four orchard systems.
The canopies were trained as adapted slender spindle and two-axis trees on rootstock B.396, and UFO and flat pyramidal canopy with at least one pair of scaffolds on rootstock MM 106. The study was conducted in the LatHort experimental orchard site (2017-2023). The effect on the start of fruit-bearing was observed for each type of canopy in the sixth year, and the training systems – slender spindle, two-axis, and UFO – allowed for the attainment of comparable 4-year cumulative yields.
The highest average productivity was obtained for slender spindle (11.2 t ha‑1), while within UFO and two-axes (5.4-6.4 t ha‑1). The orchard systems had a different rate of filling the assigned area.
At the same time, the productivity of slender spindle, 2-axis, and UFO was not statistically different in the sixth season.
In the seventh season, statistically comparable results were observed between slender spindle and UFO orchard systems (13.0 and 8.8 t ha‑1). In all orchard systems, the most productive was ‘Lora’ (4.1-20.2 t ha‑1). The model obtained through multiple regression analysis allowed us to observe trends in the influence of orchard systems on productivity.
The efficiency of summary productivity was highest for the orchard systems with rootstock B.396 (2.8-2.40 Ʃt/Ʃ cm2 ha‑1). The relation of total productivity and canopy volume was higher for the 2-axis system (118.7 Ʃt/Ʃ m3 ha‑1); others were statistically comparable.
