Abstract
Different approaches were adopted to control leafcurl virus, an epidemic disease on tomato in the Sudan.
Manipulation of sowing dates indicated markedly low incidence of the disease during the rainy season.
Chemical treatment in the field against the transmitting agent, the cotton whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) did not show any significant effect.
Interplanting tomato with crops known as hosts for the whitefly did not indicate any reduction in disease incidence.
Planting by directly seeding in the field showed outstanding effect compared to other methods of planting.
Screening of germplasm for resistance to the disease revealed sources of resistance in wild lines of different tomato species.
A breeding project to transfer resistance to commercial cultivars is under way.
