Abstract
Very little information is available regarding the relationship between yield potential and fruit characteristics of tomatoes grown in Egypt.
The objective of this study was to evaluate yield potential and fruit characteristics of some tomato cvs. which might be used as selection criteria in tomato improvement programmes.
The objective of this study was to evaluate yield potential and fruit characteristics of some tomato cvs. which might be used as selection criteria in tomato improvement programmes.
Distinct varietal differences in early yield, marketable yield, total yield, fruit weight, fruit shape index, total soluble solids %, titratable acidity and PH values were observed.
Several fruit characteristics were highly correlated to each other and to yield potential whereas others were not correlated.
Across all cultivars studied, not a single character could be possibly used as a criteria for selection, but the importance of one character as compared to another varied with specific varietal comparison.
Cultivars "UC 97–3", and "UC 204–9" were highly recommended for summer cropping in Fayoum, Egypt.
