Abstract
High or low day/night temperature (35°/24°, 10°/5°) have marked deleterious effects on flower and fruit set in tomatoes compared to controls at 25°/18°. High temperatures increase flower abscission, reduce fruit set and pollen grain viability and stimulate heterostylosis, low temperatures increase flower size and reduce pollen grain viability.
ABA concentrations are increased at high temperature and reduced at low temperature, concentrations of IAA are reduced at both high and low temperatures.
Application of IAA, ACC, GA3, ABA and BA to flowers hastens fruit set in almost all cases but the subsequent development of the flower cluster varies in relation to the growth substance applied.
