Abstract
Profitable cultural conditions cause tomato plants to grow at fast rates.
To obtain fast growth rates, full expansion of the leaves is necessary.
This type of growth requires continuous ample availability of water around the root system, without, however hampering the continuous availability of oxygen to the roots.

These two prerequisites for vigorous growth of tomato, viz. ample water and oxygen supply to the roots, can be realised with a system in which the roots grow in some porous medium, standing in a layer of nutrient solution.

Consequences of proper level control of the nutrient solution and of high growth rates are discussed.
