Abstract
Two methods of planting (direct seeding VS transplanting were compared using Pearson V.F. 36 tomato variety, in combination with different mulching treatments (no mulch, clear plastic mulch and straw mulch). The experiment was executed during 1978–1980 season at Hudeiba Research Station in Northern Sudan.
There was no significant difference in marketable yield or percentage of defective fruits between the direct seeded plots as compared with the transplanted plots.
The direct seeded plants gave larger fruits than those obtained from transplanted ones.
Clear plastic mulch gave higher yield and lower percentage of defective fruits than either control or straw mulch.
Straw mulch gave larger fruits than the other two treatments.
The incidence of leaf curl was much higher in the second season.
The disease was much evident on the transplanted plants.
